At our primary school, we had the choice between hot dinners or packed lunch. I usually opted for hot dinners and our arts and crafts helper Mrs Austen created a really cool system for how we selected what we wanted. She made a cardboard wall display with multi-coloured pockets for all the options, and you put your tickets (one for main, one for dessert) in the pockets to show what you wanted. There were usually two dessert options, either a bowl of fruit (boring!) or some kind of delicious pudding. There were two puddings that would make me jump up and down if I saw them on the label, obviously one being chocolate pudding and chocolate sauce (every kids’ favourite) and every now and then, Pineapple Upside Down Cake. This was our school chef, Mrs Roberts’ speciality. Sweet, baked, syrupy pineapple on top of the softest, warm vanilla sponge cake with rivers of hot custard. When I make it at home, it reminds me of those happy school days.
